The Best Gold Pocket Watches

Pocket watches come in many varieties of make, style and era. Master craftsmen dating from many centuries ago started creating the pocket watch. Today, even though the pocket watch has exited mainstream apparel and accessory-wear, these are still actively traded, with a huge market worldwide.

The reason for their continued sale and purchase is the timeless appeal these gold pocket watch items have. There are a multitude of styles, metal and makes available to suit the taste and budget of a variety of individuals. In today's world of tacky, cheap and short life span products, a pocket watch is a thing of the past - making it all the more precious and elegant an accessory to carry. A gold pocket watch serves as something from the Victorian era that can very distinctively become enmeshed in your personal style, if you want it to.

The best gold pocket watches are usually made of silver or gold, and many upscale jewelry stores carry a limited number of these. Likewise, the amount of gold in a watch will determine the how hard the watch will be and how much the watch will cost. The higher the gold content the softer the watch in density. For different looks, pocket watch pieces made of sterling silver or white gold can also be purchased.

Solid gold pocket watches are expensive items, but are works of art in themselves and last a life time and beyond - with such items usually becoming family heirlooms, passed on from one generation to the next. Even though these pocket time pieces are not the most convenient items (compared to wrist watches and PDAs, for example), their attraction stems from their origin - they are a thing of the past and hence, a novelty. Moreover, these are expensive items (the antique ones) which lend much prestige and class to their wearer.

In America, the largest producer used to be the Waltham Watch Company. Elgin was another renowned brand (also called the National Watch Company) that brought together three famous names in watch making and jewellery - John C. Adams, a watchmaker, Benjamin W. Raymond, a former Chicago mayor and businessman, and George B. Adams, a successful jeweller of Elgin, Illinois.

Another highly reputable brand name in gold pocket watches was that of the Illinois Springfield Watch Company. Dueber-Hampden was another major producer, which later became the Hampden Watch Company.

The largest (and most recent) giant that manufactured and sold extremely accurate time pieces was the Hamilton Watch Company.

Ever wondered if your gold pocket watch was solid gold or gold filled. Which one do you think would be more valuable. Well one of them would probably be considered a antique gold pocket watch for years to come and the other would just be well just a gold pocket watch. Thanks for sharing it.......
